Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru (first Prime Minister of India) called them the ‘Temples of Democracy’ and others called them the ‘Institutes of Higher Learning’. The IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) were created during the first two decades after independence to give India a kick start in technology and management.
