First class democracy and a third-rate media!

American democracy has scaled new heights by defeating the establishment, but the media remains busy with usual infotainment. It is not only the long-shot Barack Obama Campaign that finally prevailed but the clarity of American public opinion that came through the process. Even more impressive is the tenor and texture of the post-election process that gives the voters a glimpse into the new dispensation. What is absolutely unprecedented is the level of co-operation between the outgoing and the incoming administrations. Credit for this must be given to George W Bush as well as the President-elect Barack Obama. Media remains a spectator!

The electronic media in this country has become a joke! The station anchors, analysts, reporters and the guests talk like uneducated yo-yos. The print media is a shade better. If you reed The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times you may catch-up the subject of the day. On top of that a Time Magazine, Newsweek and Fortune would give you some more perspective. But all the information disseminated in this country is very Western-Centric. When they talk about India, it is difficult to believe that they are talking about my country. They are so off the mark that the viewers and readers are left with a  much skewed perspective of the world.

What we need to learn from the United States of America is the clarity of their constitution, the separation of the church and state, the division of power between the executive, the legislator and the judiciary. By and large the citizens and the residents feel a sense of security because of the rule of law and quick justice! There is a tremendous awareness of the civic responsibilities by the population and so the public spaces are clean and orderly. Most Americans are not very clean personally and inside their homes. The minorities feel reasonably safe except for times like 9/11 when all non-Black & White people became potential suspects.
