The United States of America is not used to any kind of prolonged uncertainties. Ever since the end of the ‘World War II’, America has ruled over the world like a colossus. During the first 40 years after the war, Soviet Union worked as a countervailing power to the growing influence of the United States. The fall of the Soviet Union in 1989 left the field wide open for the American power to grow and dominate the world. Americans enjoyed that sense of the only remaining ‘Superpower’ status in the world but refused to accept the burdens of a global leadership. Former President George H W Bush was aware of such euphoria and tried to temper-down the ‘American Swagger’ on the world stage but his successors refused any restrain and pushed their weight around! The result was a global resentment towards anything American.
There was a second track working alongside the regular American way of life and that was the changing face of the United States. Since 1961, immigration has played a vital role in the growth of the US economy. For the first time in American history, substantial immigration was allowed from Asia. Large number of students started coming to the United States from China, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and many other countries from the Middle East. Because of their ethnic cultures and values, these students generally came for higher studies in the fields of Medicine, Science and Technology. The ‘White Americans’ who dominated these areas did not pay much attention to that and continued to move towards ‘Liberal Arts’ and other such subjects. Over the next 40 years Asians took away their plum jobs!
While the ‘whites’ were giggling at the ‘Asian Accents’, these immigrants were working their ass off. Often the senior management positions were handed over to ‘White Americans’ even when they were clearly not qualified for the job. This resulted in an exodus of ‘Asian Talents’ to their own ventures and gave rise to small enterprises of their own. These small technology companies became very successful in ‘Silicon Valley’, California and at other such places on the ‘East Coast’. This change did not happen over night and any idea of reversing this trend would take decades. In the meantime Chinese, Indians, South Koreans and the Taiwanese are getting richer by the day, right here in the United States of America.
